1/14 Tuesday "Jabberwocky"

Scholar Start: Please post a comment to the blog responding to the following question:
If you woke up tomorrow, and found out you were principal of the school, what would you change? What things would you DEFINATELY keep?

  1. I would change the principal because I wouldn't want that job. I don't want to be the head of a school, in charge of a bunch of kids that don't even want to be there.

  2. If I was the principal, I would change the dress code and school lunches. However, I would definitely keep the atmosphere of the school the same, because future goal settings and the strict policy keeps the school in check and the kids on task.

  3. I would make the stairs into a slide so we can just slide down it. I would also order new running shoes for the whole cross country/track team so we can be stylin and every other school would be jealous. I would not change anything dealing with the academics and discipline.

  4. I would become a cruel leader. I would change the dress code to the most hideous and uncomfortable attire possible. I would also make the teachers give out three times more homework and make them have the kids do more notes and tests in class. Then I would make them have a one minute allotment of time to get to their next class. If they don't follow any of these rules I would skip the responsibility form entirely and just give them saturday school, and if they have three saturday schools in a row. They would then proceed to five hour detention before and after school for a week.

    1. Put a, "have a," between the "proceed to," and the, "five hour".

  5. If I woke up tomorrow and found out that I was the principal of the school I would call in sick because I am not even that organized with 7 classes. I can find things and it look nice and but i definitely would not be able to control over 500 and something people. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

  6. If I woke up and I was the principal at this school I would change dress code for sure and I would allow hoodies. Another thing I would change would be school lunches, now I'm not saying our lunches suck because I know they're better than most other schools', but I would give the students more of a variety to choose from. That's about all the stuff I'd change.

  7. I WOULD CHANGE THE HOODIE RULE! but i would also hate being a principle because that means you have to deal with all the high school drama that you've already dealt with once, or twice, or even many more times. Also you have to deal with all the constant complaining about how you're doing something wrong. And no matter how many times you try to fix it, you can never please everyone.

  8. I would change the dress code to only sweatpants and t-shirts, then I would change the lunch to like Taco Bell....etc. I would keep the classes the same and the the time period of them.

    ReplyDelete
  9. If I was principal for a day I would change a lot of things but also keep some things the same. Most people would bring back hoodies but if we did this most people would not wear collars so as a principal i would want my students in dress code. One thing i would keep is leadership values because it makes the school seem professional. I would change our leader prep classes into a catch up class for those who are failing and the other classes will be about college and graduation. I would also take away responsibility cards and just make them call there parents if they got in trouble and still have lunch detention.

  10. If I woke up and I was principal of the school my mind would be raging with endless possibilities. So many things I would change and some I would keep the same. One thing that I would definitely change would be the no hoodie rule. Everyone loves to wear hoodies. Also I would change the school lunches to where on certain days we have actual Taco Bell to eat for lunch. For easier access I would build a slide to get down to the lower half of the building just to make the students day more fun. Things I would keep would be a few things but I'm not yet sure what they are yet.

  11. if i were principal of TNHS I would sit in my roll around chair and play games on the computer and tell the vice principals to handle all of the work.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Well, if I was the principal of the school I would allow you to wear hats and hoodies in the building (I think everyone's going to say that but oh well). I would also require a study hall period for sophomores, juniors, and seniors so they can rest their brains or work on homework or whatever. Also, I would make a Photography 2 class, because honestly I want a more advanced photography class.

    ReplyDelete
  13. If I were principle, I would make every Friday out of dress code day, so the students can wear what they want one day out of the week. I would make a new rule saying that students could go off campus for lunch, but they have to be back in time for their next class. However, I would keep the pride rallies because for the most part all students enjoy them, and they are a good way of celebrating our achievements for that past school semester.

  14. I wouldn't be able to change anything because the school board makes the rules for all the schools in the district not the principal. All changes must go through the board first for the changes to have any real affect the principal does have an influence on these decisions though.

  15. If I was the principal of the school I would keep the Leader Prep class. I think that it is a beneficial class for everyone to make them college and career ready. I honestly would keep dress code the same. Compared to other schools in the area, our dress code isn't that bad. Besides, we look nice when we come to school. I would change the time that we would arrive to school to a later time. I would make sure that there are enough electives so that every student gets to take at least one they really want.

  16. I very much like the way our school is structured however, if I were to change I would make myself as a principal more approachable. Seeing as how being a principal it can be intimidating to some I would make sure that I was very approachable; however, at the same time I would stay strict and uphold the policies of the school. Certainly, there are other things that could be changed but I remain true to our schools principles and feel truly that it is a fairly good system that does not need many drastic changes. Overall the only thing I would change (that I could think of at this moment) is the intimidation that comes with a position of power.

  17. If i was the principal of a school, I would for sure make it to where there was no dress code whatsoever, no more nasty school lunches, and do away with kids that got on my nerves. What I would keep would have to be our LEADER values because that's the most important thing to TNHS. ._.

  18. If I was the principal of the school, I would change the hoodie rule, obviously. The students would be allowed to wear hoodies, but also hats. Of course, they could only wear them if they were appropriate. I think I would definitely keep our lunch menu, but I would change the wheat buns back to the regular buns. I would also make Propels free because some students don't like milk or plain water, so without free Propels, they wouldn't have anything to drink. I would also keep the Chromebooks, but make them all the same and fastest version. I would also change the dress code to where you are allowed to wear anything you'd like that's school appropriate. That way, people can express themselves. This would be the first things I would do if I was the principal tomorrow.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The only thing I would change is the amount of student input into our school values. Of course there are things like General Assembly and the Leadership dynamics class, both of which I am in, that help shape our school culture, but other students should get a chance too. I would keep pretty much all the rules and values.

  20. I don't want the role of being principal becasue it seem to stressfull. I wouldn't change anything because it seems to be working just fine. Why change something that is working.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would get rid of the dress code we have, but not for childish reasons. Wearing clothes that you like provide you with a sense of originality and person. Without dress code someone might feel more confident and comfortable at school, something that kids struggle with these days. I would still keep the helpful teachers and guidance councilors at our school. Growing up isn't easy. It's very stressful to figure out your life in a four year span, especially if you don't really have a plan to start with. But the teachers here help and guide the students in things that really matter, which is the most important thing to have in high schools.

  22. If I woke up and I was the principal of the school I would definitely change the internet routers because we have way too many here. I would also try and serve different foods at lunch because it saddens me to see the cafeteria workers make complete crap. I would also host a raffle every month where the winner receives a fabulous prize. A good prize not a gift card. Maybe things like Beats or a Chromebook. The dress code isn't really an issue for me because i look like a drug dealer in most hoodies. I would also introduce nap time again because sleeping is fun.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If I was principal of the school there isn't a lot I would change. The biggest thing I would probably change would be the lunch food. I think it is nasty and too greasy half the time. We should get healthier foods instead of pizza with gallons of grease. Another thing I would probably change would be that all teachers have to put in the same amount of grades. In vet science by teacher has but in at least 25 grades already and I have an A in there. In one of my classes however I have a B and that teacher has only put in about 15 grades; most of my work in this class was As but I did bad on one test and now I'm 2 points from an A. Things I would keep would be the no hoodie rule, how the classes worked and the use of computers in classes.

  24. If i was principal i would change many things. First of all i would allow the students to wear clothes that are comfortable for them, i believe this allows students to pay more attention than to be pulling on uncomfortable clothing. Also i would hve the school offer some subjects you need a basic knowledge on like history and reading, but more subjects on jobs. Students need to know how to do taxes, what to do at a bank, how to apply for a job; not sit at a desk and be told to be quiet, we don't learn that way. Students need to be more involved in learning, make it fun, have it like the job they want. Homework wouldn't really be necessary, you don't do work at home, you shouldn't hate school, you should want to learn. Students shouldn't be packed with homework, they should want to have to join more clubs and sports and get different jobs.

  25. If i was principal i would defiantly change the hoodie rule & get rid of the responsibility forms. But i wouldn't want to be a principal because it seems like too much work. There would be too many things to deal with at once.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would change the dress code, and the lunches. I wouldn't change the schools values and academics.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'd make this school way more of a democracy. All school decisions will be announced, and students will vote on what they feel needs to happen. We need to lengthen the school day, what area do you think we need more time for? Students are getting low grades in math, what do you think a good solution for tht would be? Also, Leader Prep would be thrown out because all we learn in there is how to act here, what this school's values are, how we behave in these classrooms. Thats not something students should be concerned about. We're here for four years, thats it. Nobody's going to remember if they 'found the moose', they're going to remember if they successfully learned all the material needed for college and their career. The LP time would be replaced with a home ec type class, except students would be taught about credit cards, and going to the bank. How checks work, how to budget, etc. Things nobody knows how to do, but needs to know to live successfully. Uniforms are out because its too expensive to try to keep up with two sets of clothes. Counselors would be more approachable, and I'd hire two more specifically for students to go to at all times. The food would be changed, because it is very gross.

  28. If I was principal, although I don't really want to be, I would change several things about this school. One, Ill say that lunch will offer more mac and cheese, spaghetti, and breadsticks. Next, I would want to rehire Mr. Bennett because he was an awesome teacher who cared about his students. Next I would give everyone a raise. I will also do away with homework and essays. School dances and fun activities would be more frequent. I will also change the dress code to where we could wear bands shirts and non-solid color skinny jeans and allow hoodies. I would definitely allow phones in class and fire any teacher who was mean to kids or expell any kid who got in a fight at school. Nap time would also be allowed in the middle of the day and we will have a two hour freetime time during the day.

    2. If I was principal I would change a few things. Hoodies and sweatpants would be permitted and there would be no "Eat Oatmeal" signs around the school. There would be a salad bar everyday and sprite would be an option. Responsibility forms wouldn't exist and you could have freedom! You could speak your mind without worrying about getting in trouble and do as you please. & no leader prep. I like Thomas Nelson, but change can be a good thing.

  29. If I was principal, I would change several things. Such as dress code. I would have sweat pants and hoodies.. All day everyday. The lunch menu would be Taco Bell.. Because, who doesn't like Taco Bell? Another thing I would change is the Responsibility Forms. I believe they are dumb soo I would just give the student detention. No questions asked. Another thing I would include is napping. It would be after lunch for an hour or so.

  30. I would change the hoodie rule, and adjust techonology rules. I'd definitely keep our LEADER values. Most of the rules in our school are very effective and have kept the atmosphere here positive.

  31. Why is this named Jabberwocky? Jabberwockies have nothing to do with me being a principle. Erg. So if I was the principle, I would arrange there to be more dances than just a few. That's probably all I would change.

  32. If I woke up and were principle of the school I would defiantly change the hoodie rule. I would change it because I think that the rule of having no hoodies is kinda stupid because this school is really cold! Also, I would change the PDA rule. I think that we shouldn't have to have a side hug because a frontal hug isn't bad at all. I do think that no kissing and other things are very much necessary. Finally, I would change the fact that teachers get to wear pretty much whatever they want. I think that if the students have to follow a certain dress code, so do the teachers. Some of the things that I would keep would be everything else because I, perfectly fine with all the other rules.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If I was principal I wouldn't change very much about the school, because even though the students don't like the rules here, The principals, and board of education are trying to help us grow up into responsible young adults. I don't agree on the things we get responsibility forms for such as losing something in the lost nad found. I think all of the rules other than that are great rules, because this school strives to be the best and you can't be the best if you aren't responsible, and that's pretty much the whole idea of being here at Thomas Nelson. I honestly would change very little about the school. I like it here, and the rules have gotten me to grow up quite a bit since my freshman year.

  34. If I were principal, I would change the hours of school. Instead of having a five day week, the weeks would only be 4 days and an hour added on and a couple extra days so there will be Fridays off. Classes wouldn't be scattered around the school. It wouldn't matter what classroom because all assignments would be on everyone's personal chromebook. This would be feasible if, with my becoming principal, I was also given a million dollars to make these changes. Hoodies could only be allowed if a student paid a dollar everyday. That could be 700 dollars if every student paid in one day. That could buy 2 or 3 chromebooks. On days when the board of education would visit, all students would have to comply to the no hoodie rule for those days.

  35. If I was the principal, I would make sure there was more reconition in clubs and sports. The school would not be as boring. There would be more school spirit in the school over the sports teams.

  36. If i was principal, the first thing I would do is make hoodies and yoga pants dress code for several reasons. I would also take away the chromebooks because I hate them, and they are annoying. I would also do away with responsibility forms because I feel like just the thought of it brings me back to Kindergarten. This is the College & Career readiness school, do you honestly think in college they are going to give us responsibility forms and make us eat lunch quietly? but I would keep our faculty especially Ms. Bates because she's my favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I would immediately try and find another job. I couldn't handle that job. If I were to change some things I would have a period where it would be like study time and free time where people would maybe be more involved after school and get some homework or reading done during school. It would be like 30 minutes to get some things done or even read some and then classes would be cut a little shorter or have less periods again. I would take recommendations and have a talk with the student about their idea and then make a decision of their recommendation. I would change the responsibility forms because I don't think they discipline very well because lunch detention doesn't really bother people. I would have actual after school detention and ISS. I wouldn't even have Saturday school because that is more money the school has to spend and I would just deal with the problem inside of school.

    ReplyDelete
  38. If I was principal from now on, I would adjust the hoodie rule; allowing students to wear ONLY thomas nelson hoodies. I would continue the responsibility form rules as well as the elevator rules; they are both reasonable to me.

    ReplyDelete
  39. If I was principal, I would change a few things. I would change dress code because everyone else in then county can wear hoodies but we cant. I would still enforce the leader values but I wouldnt make everything revolve around the leader values and stuff like 100% everyday. I think that is just too much. I would change having pizza everyday because the pizza here is disgusting and we would have more spagetti, breadsticks, and breakfast for lunch because those are the best lunches we have here.

    ReplyDelete
  40. If I was principal I would change the space between our college spirit days and out of dress code days. It feels as though we wait too long between the dress code days now and that we don't get many that often. We do get out of dress code but we have to wait until the end of every quarter which seems like a long time between the days. I would also change our cafeteria to where we had lunch options from some fast food restaurants everyday. I would change having second lunch for some AP classes. AP classes are challenging and require a lot of time and effort as it is. The fact that we have lunch in the middle makes it harder to get things done in class because of time shortage. Things I would keep the same would be college and career readiness enforcement because it keeps us on track for our futures and helps us. I also like the fact that people are so courteous to themselves and others and keep this school clean.

    ReplyDelete
  41. If I was principal I would bring Mr.Bennett back! Also, I would put in vending machines that were accessible by students. That would create a greater income for the school and allow for more projects, whether it be expanding the school or having more money for teachers to spend in the classrooms.

  42. If i was principal, I would change many things. First of all, I would change the dress code. You would be able to wear things such as hoodies, t-shirts, and sweatpants. Secondly you would be able to hug your classmates, thirdly we would be able to use our technology during classes. If you ca multi task thats fine but if you cant thats your own fault.

  43. If I was the principal, I would keep a lot of things. For example, I would keep the Interim Assessments. These help prepare us for the ACT which is looked at by colleges. It is essential that everyone does their best on this and these Interim Assessments only help us get a higher score. I would also keep the House Pride Rallies, but I would change the way they were formatted. When sitting out and not participating in the pride rally, it is very boring. I would do something where almost everyone could be involved and it would be fun. I would also develop pride rallies for rival sports games to increase school spirit. This would help make our school a better place. I would also keep Leader Prep. I would change the content though and base it more on college preparation. I would make Tuesday News day not just a Tuesday thing, but on Thursdays as well. This would also aid in school spirit. I would allow more posters on the hallway and add color as our school is bland. I would also keep the LEADER values. I wouldn't change many things about this school. It's an amazing place and only helps to make all of us a better person.

  44. If i was principal then i would change the hoodie rule and then i would probably change my job because to me i think that being a principal would be to confusing. Then i would keep everything else for the future the same because whenever there are really strict rules then students tend to listen a whole lot better.

    ReplyDelete
  45. If I were the principal I'd make this school more of a together mentality or democracy. The school decisions would be made by the students and the majority would rule then if a undecided the staff make it. Leader Prep would also, be thrown out because all we learn in there is the school's values. Or how we behave in this school and our classrooms. That's something students should be concerned about but takes time away from needed class time that we could be in. We're here for four years a class about the school's values and priorities is not something that should be taking up our time, considering we also learn that ALL the time, everyday! Uniforms also need to be gone because its too expensive to try to keep up with two sets of clothes, your everyday and then your school attire. All though I think there should be a level to how students dress so no inappropriate clothes are worn.

    ReplyDelete
  46. If I was to wake up and automatically be principal, I would change the dresscode. I mean not being able to wear hoodies is like not being able to wear pants to school. HOODIES ARE AMAZING! Another thing I would change is the school's food. No offense to the lunch ladies, but we literally have pizza everyday, and it looks like a piece of cardboard with grease on the top, and little pepperoni decorations to make it look real. If I was to keep something the same, it would have to be the LEADER values, because they actually made things a whole lot better, and it makes our school look a little more professional.

  47. If I were principal, I honestly don't think I would change much because I believe things run smoothly here at TNHS. I would try to make the daily high school routine for students as close to a college setting as possible. Friday would be a different schedule; Whether students attended classes in reverse order or a well planned random order (due to ATC classes,) I would definitely mix things up on Friday. I would try to vouch for an out of dress code day at least once a month. I would try to create a system where certain teachers could only give homework on certain days. This way, students wouldn't be crammed with too much all on one day. If I were principal, I would try to lay as low as possible: making minimal changes and keeping the students and teachers comfortable, happy, and engaged every single day.

    ReplyDelete
  48. if i were principle i would immediately change dress could because students should be able to feel comfortable at school and express them self with the clothes they wear. I would keep the times of every class the same. i would change the lunch menu. After a while hamburgers gets old. i would change the responsibly form some of it is silly.

    ReplyDelete
  49. If I were principal, I'd probably start by trying to find somebody else to be principal because big jobs like that where there is so much responsibility and a lot of people are affected by your decisions really make me nervous. Although, if I didn't have a choice, I'd start by giving the students more say in the things that happen by voting like we do when we pick homecoming court. Also, there would be more classes that have to do with real life things. Like writing checks and how to handle money and budgeting with bills and what not.

  51. If I were the principal of this school, I would fund money to somehow may the locker rooms bigger. For PE classes, it gets a little crammed with all of the girls in one classroom trying to get ready (and we're not allowed to change clothes in any other rooms unless we participate in a sport). (The locker rooms should have definitely been bigger when the school was being built.) I'd also assign more one-on-one time with the guidance counselors because I feel like even though we have teachers for Leader Prep, it's not really helping anything at all. Maybe some students needs to talk about their futures and need some input from an adult. I'd also assign a salad bar everyday because I feel like that is much healthier than the greasy food that the school provides (and it tastes better as well!). I'd also change the Leader Prep to more of a class that helped with ACT and that sort of thing (and also having worksheets for subjects that people are struggling with)- I think that helps much more than what we're doing in there.

  52. If I was principal, I would change many things. Students would have not as strict of a dress code; they could wear what they wanted but still with a few restriction but they would be allowed to express who they were. Students would be allowed to have drinks in class and not just water. But some things I would keep are the chromebooks because they help us learn. And I would also change the lunch and they can actually give us real food that is really good.

  53. I am your new principal. Come on, smile! I believe that our former principal did a wonderful job at handling this school, but I would like to invoke a few changes. The first of these changes applies to the Senior class. Some of you are considered adults and the rest of you are approaching that point in life. For the last two hours of the Fridays all Seniors will participate in a Real World Simulation. This is something that will help with real life skills such as paying bills and setting budgets for your family. The next rule I will be applying is Free Dress Fridays once a month. Our dress code is different from the other schools in our district, so I believe that we should have a different and special day to be dressed how we want (appropriately of course). There are also some rules that I would like to maintain here at TNHS. Our LEADER values are a very important thing that I believe help to shape our school. We will continue to focus our school around these values and strive to uphold them.

  54. If I was to be chosen to be principal I would definitely change the hoodie rule because that is not a district-wide rule. It varies by school. I would try to enhance the cafeteria food and I'd make salad line happen everyday. I'd let posters be hung up all over the place as long as they promoted our school. I'd keep the chrome books because everyone seems to like using them and I'd keep the faculty too because I like all my teachers. Instead of house pride rallies I'd allow free days where you could choose a place to go on campus and just hang out until school is over, that way you get a break after testing. Speaking of testing, even though IA's aren't very fun I would keep them because they do help improve ACT scores. I would tell the teachers to refrain from giving out homework if their class is productive. I'd change the PDA rules a little bit. Of course no one would be allowed to like make out in the hallway but I think hugging and holding hands would be okay and not inappropriate. Being the principal would be really cool and I think I'd enjoy it.

  55. If i was principal then i would change the dress code and make it a lot less strict, i would also change the late bell rule where you have to be in your seat started by the time that the second bell rung I would make it so where your'e at least in the classroom before the second bell, started or not. I would also allow kids to have their phone out while we are taking note if they wanted to. I would keep all of the same teachers here because they do a wonderful job with the academics and how the teachers remind us the rules and how to act

    ReplyDelete
  56. If I was principal for the day there is a few things I would change. First off I would change the dress code. I don't see a need for collard shirts and I don't see any reason why hoodies cannot be worn. Instead of spending so much time trying to force kids to pass classes I feel like teachers should spend more time trying to help students survive in the real world. Students unless they are in that career pathway will not need to know history. They're going to need to know how to balance checkbooks write checks, and real life things such as that. I would also try make counselors more available to students and make students feel more comfortable about going to them. The lunch while is not that bad, could still be improved like the pizza and even the toast in the morning are both almost completely saturated in grease so I'd have that changed. Thats about it I would keep the leader values since I think they are actually things you should live by when you get out into the work force.
