"The policemen pushed him out of the way and got on with their work. Three men with spraying machines buckled to their shoulders pumped thick clouds of soma vapour into the air." The police used soma vapor to calm down civilians and control them. The soma is used by the government to control the people to a degree.
"you do look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma." This quote means that even when people just look bad they take soma. It is not a bad thing to take it it is like drinking water or taking an aleve. It is their pain killer that they feel no affect from after they come down from their high. This drug is really jacked up
"Soma was served with the coffee. Lenina took two half-gramme tablets and Henry three." I feel as if this quote is saying that Soma is like an everyday food item. If the Some is served with coffee, then they can get it pretty much anywhere. Also, i think that depending what class you're in (Delta, Beta, Gamma, etc) you can have more or less Soma than someone else. If you're an Epsilon you might not get as mush Soma as a Alpha.
"Soma was served with the coffee. Lenina took two half-gramme tablets and Henry three." In this society soma is very widely used and has become a part of their daily routine. With this there is a connection to drugs that we use today. People that have been using drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, etc; use that as their daily routine. They feel as if they NEED it. It has become part of their life just as soma has in this deranged society.
"Lenina was still sobbing. "Too awful," she kept repeating, and all Bernard's consolations were in vain. "Too awful! That blood!" She shuddered. "Oh, I wish I had my soma." " Lenina was in pain because she had seen something disturbing and all she wants is soma to make it all go away. She knows all will be fine once she takes soma. Soma just fixes everything.
"I don't understand anything," she said with decision, determined to preserve her incomprehension intact. "Nothing. Least of all," she continued in another tone "why you don't take soma when you have these dreadful ideas of yours. You'd forget all about them. And instead of feeling miserable, you'd be jolly. So jolly," In their society, taking soma is almost expected. If something is wrong, the solution is soma. They believe that it fixes everything, and it's crazy NOT to take it. I feel that they have become addicted to the idea of soma. They want it to make all their problems go away, and to them it does succeed in doing this. However, I think it is like a placebo. They think that it solves their problems, so in their minds, it does.
"By this time the soma had begun to work. Eyes shone, cheeks were flushed, the inner light of universal benevolence broke out on every face in happy, friendly smiles. Even Bernard felt himself a little melted." Soma is their drug they use to get "high." It makes them feel relaxed and happy. They use them almost like you would cigarettes. They take them whenever they feel the need to come down, the same as smokers would. Soma is their drug like cigarettes and it also shortens their life they same way.
"By this time the soma had begun to work. Eyes shone, cheeks were flushed, the inner light of universal benevolence broke out on every face in happy, friendly smiles. Even Bernard felt himself a little melted." I think this quote means, that when the soma was taken and began to work everyone became happier. When you take soma it fixes everything and you feel better. It doesn't seem like it has any negative effects.
“Was and will make me ill, I take a gram and only am."
This quote from the story A Brave New World is just one of many examples of how people need this soma. This quote specifically says that that what they did or what they are about to do might make them stressed or feel like they don't want to do it, like kind of lagging. So they take the soma and they are eased, in a way. They feel free and are only in the now, nothing else really matters. They can keep on going and feel fine. This is a control to make sure no conflict happens with ones self and between others.
"Bernard also laughed; after two grammes of soma the joke seemed, for some reason, good. Laughed and then, almost immediately, dropped off to sleep,..." Soma is really wierd and it gets tiring after you use it. It is like a drug. They might be using soma so they can control the alphas, betas etc.. They do not want them to be more advanced then they are. This could be used as a chemical warfare.
"A gramme is better than a damn," said Lenina mechanically from behind her hands. "I wish I had my soma!" "
Another example of the common catchphrases/ propaganda in the World State. Soma functions as a safety blanket for the people in this society. Without soma, people, like Lenina, begin to panic if there is no soma. Soma could be being used to calm people so no uprisings or rebellions since soma has a calming high for the people affected.
"The warm, the richly colored, the infinitely friendly world of soma-holiday. How kind, how good-looking, how delightfully amusing every one was! " Soma is a drug that makes you feel no withdrawal so obviously the people who use it will describe it as a wonderful thing. This quote shows how addictive it can be. Also they are talking about how they get so addicted and take a ton of it and go on a "soma-holiday." The way this makes them feel is described as enjoyable but very addictable because everyone is always on soma and can't stop using it.
"As soon as they got back to the rest-house, she swallowed six half-gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had embarked for lunar eternity. It would be eighteen hours at the least before she was in time again."
I feel like she was tired from a long journey and she wanted to feel better so she took soma so she could get plenty of rest. I think soma is like a sleeping pill that makes you sleep for a long time depending on how many you take. I think it's like an addictive drug.
"Two minutes later the Voice and the soma vapour had produced their effect. In tears, the Deltas were kissing and hugging one another-half a dozen twins at a time in a comprehensive embrace.." after evevryone was affected by the drugs everyone was punching each other and wanted to hurt each other but after the fighting was over everyone loved each other and wanted to be around each other and happy with each other.
'Hug me till you drug me, honey; Kiss me till I'm in a coma; Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny; Love's as good as soma." This one is pretty much saying that nobody can love them as well as soma and they couldn't live without it
"The policemen pushed him out of the way and got on with their work. Three men with spraying machines buckled to their shoulders pumped thick clouds of soma vapour into the air." I think this quote means that the police officers are teaming up with the distribution center where children are made. Society is trying control human emotions. Because soma is an option, the officers could be doing this to make sure society has been exposed to soma. The more the people use soma the shorter their life span becomes. This insures the distribution center for children is not shut down. I do not agree with this concept.
"you do look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma." I feel like this quote shows how much people depended on this drug and felt the need to have it with just a second of unhappiness. It became familiar to them and the high they felt was like a need, a daily routine. Soma is addictive and has became apart of them and their society.
"It was after midnight when the last of the helicopters took its flight. Stupefied by soma, and exhausted by a long-drawn frenzy of sensuality, the Savage lay sleeping in the heather. The sun was already high when he awoke. He lay for a moment, blinking in owlish incomprehension at the light; then suddenly remembered-everything. "Oh, my God, my God!" He covered his eyes with his hand." This quote means that within a euphoric state induced by soma, a man was still able to do a bad deed. This action is not known from just the quote, but it is something that could lead a man to regret it a whole lot. This means that soma isn't perfect and doesn't completely calm the man.
"Swallowing half an hour before closing time, that second dose of soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their minds." This quote is stating that if someone takes enough soma then they will completely zone out. This drug is so euphoric that the people ingesting it have no idea what they're going or what is happening in the world. They just act on impulse without comprehension of what they're doing.
So jolly," -This quote is a good in tell about how people see the drug. Oh you feel bad take soma, oh your back hurts take some soma. They have this openess and realiance on this drug to keep them happy or content with their life. It is another way to control these people because the woman said, "I don't understand anything.."
"..there is always soma, delicious soma, half a gramme for a half-holiday, a gramme for a week-end, two grammes for a trip to the gorgeous East, three for a dark eternity on the moon..." Soma is their answer, its an addiction, and their best friend. It can make them feel no pain and take them on a holiday far away.
"..there is always soma, delicious soma, half a gramme for a half-holiday, a gramme for a week-end, two grammes for a trip to the gorgeous East, three for a dark eternity on the moon..." This quote is informing us that soma is common and is used all the time. It is used to make events, feelings, and just about everything else more pleasant. It is so common that everyone uses it. Its a drug that makes reality more enjoyable, without the negative effects. But it does affect long term by shortening your life. The quote is telling us the commonality of soma and its affect on reality in pleasant terms.
"you do look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma." This quote to me shows that in times of minor sorrow, they relied on this drug to life them back up. They were dependent on this drug to delude them from the pains of reality.
"The policemen pushed him out of the way and got on with their work. Three men with spraying machines buckled to their shoulders pumped thick clouds of soma vapour into the air." This quote to me shows that even the police officers cannot control people anymore. The only thing that can control people and make them feel better is by taking this drug. Without the drug, people would go crazy because they are use to using the drug everyday so their bodies depends on it.
"Swallowing half an hour before closing time, that second dose of soma had raised a quite impenetrable wall between the actual universe and their minds." I feel this quote is saying that when people take Soma they completely are out of this world. They zone out and have no idea of the things they are doing or what is going on in the world. They just act not knowing the truly knowing what is going on. They are out of their self.
"All the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects." This quote means that soma gives you great, happy feelings without the side effects associated with other drugs. You can feel heavenly without being Christian and feel drunk without actually being drunk.
''Hug me till you drug me, honey; Kiss me till I'm in a coma; Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny; Love's as good as soma." The drug is so much a part or them and their lives, it's just as much as good to them as love is to us. They feel as if they can't live without it.
"All the advantages of Christianity and alcohol; none of their defects." This quote tries to relate to things people use commonly like religion or alcohol to convince you that this drug is good and has no defects.
"A gramme is better than a damn," said Lenina mechanically from behind her hands. "I wish I had my soma!" This quote to me shows they don't care as long as they have soma. They could be on their death bed, but everything is perfectly fine as long as they have soma. The people, like Lenina, rely on soma on a daily basis. The addictive drug has caused the people literally not to "give a damn," as long as they have soma.
"Drying her eyes, Lenina walked across the roof to the lift. On her way down to the twenty-seventh floor she pulled out her soma bottle. One gramme, she decided, would not be enough; hers had been more than a one-gramme affliction. But if she took two grammes, she ran the risk of not waking up in time to-morrow morning. She compromised and, into her cupped left palm, shook out three half-gramme tablets." To start, I find it very interesting that it says she was going "down" but it is to the twenty-seventh floor... How tall are the buildings in this time?? I also can infer that since it says "she pulled out her soma bottle", that every single person has their own soma bottle and usually keeps it with them. Finally, the fact that she is wary of taking 2 because she could possibly not wake up, but then ends up taking 1.5. So how much stronger is that half of a gramme?
"you do look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma." They relied on this drug to take away the pains of real life. Something bad happens during the day, let me just go take a soma so my day will get better. Im sad so I will take a soma. They rely on soma to get them through life.
""But it's terrible," Lenina whispered. "It's awful. We ought not to have come here." She felt in her pocket for her soma - only to discover that, by some unprecedented oversight, she had left the bottle down at the rest-house. Bernard's pockets were also empty." Lenina was left to face the horrors of Malpais unaided."
Lenina was upset when she realized she had left her soma at home. She had a need for this drug and felt as though she NEEDED it to survive. She thought that without it she could not face the situation she was about to. Whatever Malpais is, must seem awful to Lenina because she feels as though she needs soma to face the situation and be happy. Soma has provided them a sense of security and the need for it for them was real and necessary to face everyday life.
"When the Warden started booming, she had inconspicuously swallowed half a gramme of soma, with the result that she could now sit, serenely not listening, thinking of nothing at all, but with her large blue eyes fixed on the Warden's face in an expression of rapt attention." Be free, no worries, no stress. You are in you're own little world now; everything is okay thanks to soma. ~beth simpson
"Benighted fool!" shouted the man from The Fordian Science Monitor, "why don't you take soma?" "Get away!" The Savage shook his fist. The other retreated a few steps then turned round again. "Evil's an unreality if you take a couple of grammes." "Kohakwa iyathtokyai!" The tone was menacingly derisive. "Pain's a delusion." "Oh, is it?" said the Savage and, picking up a thick hazel switch, strode forward. The man from The Fordian Science Monitor made a dash for his helicopter." This quote shows how the people literally thought that anyone who didn't take soma was stupid. They call the Savage a fool for not taking soma! The Savage recognizes the deceit behind society's use of soma. The people literally believe that pain is non- existent as long as you take soma. That instead of being burried down deep in the subconscious, pain is unreal. It just doesn't exist. The Savage is the only one in this situation that is not completely brainwashed by the seemingly delightful drug. -Faith Brown
'Hug me till you drug me, honey; Kiss me till I'm in a coma; Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny; Love's as good as soma." In this quote it's explaining how soma makes you feel in a goofy sing-song way. The feeling of love is seen as one of the most giddy and happy feelings ever. They're comparing soma to this because soma puts you in this tremendously happy place. It helps to remove them from reality and make all their troubles float away.
"Soma was served with the coffee. Lenina took two half-gramme tablets and Henry three." I feel like this quote is talking about how most of the people take one more than what they are suppose to do. So this quote also means that you can have some weird effects on the tablets.
""Because our world is not the same as Othello's world. You can't make flivvers without steel-and you can't make tragedies without social instability. The world's stable now. People are happy; they get what they want, and they never want what they can't get. They're well off; they're safe; they're never ill; they're not afraid of death; they're blissfully ignorant of passion and old age; they're plagued with no mothers or fathers; they've got no wives, or children, or lovers to feel strongly about; they're so conditioned that they practically can't help behaving as they ought to behave. And if anything should go wrong, there's soma. Which you go and chuck out of the window in the name of liberty, Mr. Savage. Liberty!" He laughed. "Expecting Deltas to know what liberty is! And now expecting them to understand Othello! My good boy!"" This society was addicted to soma and constantly felt the common to have it. Soma has created a sense of false happiness in which they can only achieve through use of the drug. People do not have to worry about being unhappy because they always have soma. You have an unhappy thought? Oh, just have some soma. No big deal... Soma is a cover for unhappiness.
""What's in those" (remembering The Merchant of Venice) "those caskets?" the Savage enquired when Bernard had rejoined him. "The day's soma ration," Bernard answered rather indistinctly; for he was masticating a piece of Benito Hoover's chewing-gum. "They get it after their work's over. Four half-gramme tablets. Six on Saturdays."" From this quote, I can infer that the soma is a reward. People work for it! It's like their money: they feel like they need it in order to survive or be happy. They have tons and tons of it, and once someone takes it, all of the hard work that they need was completely worth it.
"you do look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma." these people are so focused on soma they need it so bad in there life and society. they dont need it its just all in there heads to make them feel better.
''Hug me till you drug me, honey; Kiss me till I'm in a coma; Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny; Love's as good as soma."
They're saying soma makes them feel really good and causes all these affects on their body and they want you to love them in a way that they get that same feeling.
"Lenina was still sobbing. "Too awful," she kept repeating, and all Bernard's consolations were in vain. "Too awful! That blood!" She shuddered. "Oh, I wish I had my soma." This quote is saying that when there is a moment of sadness, people don't try and get out of it by themselves. Instead, they have a reliance on soma and go to that to be happy again. It is almost like they are addicted to the feeling soma gives them
"You do not look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma." -I think this quote means that they relied on the drug, and they think it's going to help them, but really, it makes everything worse than it already was.
"The policemen pushed him out of the way and got on with their work. Three men with spraying machines buckled to their shoulders pumped thick clouds of soma vapour into the air."

"Benighted fool!" shouted the man from The Fordian Science Monitor, "why don't you take soma?"
ReplyDelete"Get away!" The Savage shook his fist.
The other retreated a few steps then turned round again. "Evil's an unreality if you take a couple of grammes."
"Kohakwa iyathtokyai!" The tone was menacingly derisive.
"Pain's a delusion."
"Oh, is it?" said the Savage and, picking up a thick hazel switch, strode forward.
The man from The Fordian Science Monitor made a dash for his helicopter."
This quote shows how the people literally thought that anyone who didn't take soma was stupid.

'Hug me till you drug me, honey;
ReplyDeleteKiss me till I'm in a coma;
Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny;
Love's as good as soma."
In this quote it's explaining how soma makes you feel in a goofy sing-song way.
ReplyDelete""Because our world is not the same as Othello's world. My good boy!""
ReplyDeleteThis society was addicted to soma and constantly felt the common to have it.
ReplyDelete"The day's soma ration," Bernard answered rather indistinctly; for he was masticating a piece of Benito Hoover's chewing-gum. "They get it after their work's over. Four half-gramme tablets. Six on Saturdays.""
From this quote, I can infer that the soma is a reward.
ReplyDelete''Hug me till you drug me, honey;
ReplyDeleteKiss me till I'm in a coma;
Hug me, honey, snuggly bunny;
Love's as good as soma."
They're saying soma makes them feel really good and causes all these affects on their body and they want you to love them in a way that they get that same feeling.
"Her tears began to flow again. "I suppose John told you. What I had to suffer - and not a gramme of soma to be had. Only a drink of mescal every now and then, when Popé used to bring it.""
ReplyDeleteThis quote shows me how important soma is to this societies everyday life. They need it to function daily. Without it, the day sounds almost like torture.
It is almost like they are addicted to the feeling soma gives them
ReplyDelete"You do not look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma."
ReplyDelete-I think this quote means that they relied on the drug, and they think it's going to help them, but really, it makes everything worse than it already was.
