"You can't forget," he said in a raspy voice, "The key, the key, you have to keep up with it, or all is lost." Though I couldn't see him through the darkness of the morning, I could feel a tiny brass key slip into my hand.
Whenever i felt the key slip into my hand i immediately went to go see what room it would fit. So, that way i could see what that guy was trying to hide, but once i went in there i really couldn't see a whole lot because it was very dark and i didn't have a flashlight.
My mind goes blank. I'm not even sure what to do. I shiver and gasp a large breath of air as I take the key. I search for a door that it could go to, but the only thing my mind is thinking is " what is beyond that door?" I try a couple of doors and nothing happens and then I finally get to the fifth door and I hear the lock click. I am scared to turn it, but my heart tells me I have to.
I tried to ask him what the key was about, but he was gone in the darkness. I didn't think that the key was all that important so I threw it away because I needed an explanation for why I needed to hold on to it. That morning I woke up and right in my face was the same man, with the raspy voice asking for the key, I explained that I didn't have it anymore because I threw it away. The man grabbed me and threw me across the room yelling, " The key, the key, the key.."
ALICE IN WONDERLAND SCENE: I ran to the door, and opened up the lock, and walked into a world that looked so familiar. Flying rocking horses, flowers who can talk, and two fat twins staring at me. "Are you the real Alice?", says one of the twins. "Of course she's not the real Alice!" says a little white mouse. Alice responded, "How am I the wrong Alice if this is my dream?"
I had no idea what this key was to. Is this the key to life? Is this the secret to why I did the things I did? All I knew was that I had to protect this key with my life. I walked down the street, cautious of anyone or anything that got a little too close to my key. A tall-bearded man emerged from one of the jewelry stores as I fell to the ground in panic. He helped me up by my elbow and I found myself on my feet once again. I looked up to the man and he grinned and continued walking. I thought to myself, "Thank goodness! He didn't take the key." I opened my hand to recollect my mysterious award and found that it was nowhere to be found.
The key was my ticket to freedom. I grasped the tiny key in my hand and ran into the darkness. "Look for the light." I stuttered in my mind. I couldn't see, I couldn't feel. What direction was I going in? Finally..the light. I reached for the hope of freedom and fell into an endless hole. Down, down I went further into the Earth's core until the flames engulfed all of me. I felt blazing hot and twitched over into a winter wonderland. Where was I? Why would he lead me here?
It was cold just like a normal key but something was different about this key. I rolled the key over and over in my hand trying to deceiver what was so different about this key. I processed all the things I could from it and still could not figure out what was the matter with this key. As I stood, in that cobble stone street It hit me. The key was not different but it had such importance that I could feel it in my hand.
"You can't forget," he said in a raspy voice, "The key, the key, you have to keep up with it, or all is lost." Though I couldn't see him through the darkness of the morning, I could feel a tiny brass key slip into my hand. "What do I do with it?" I asked, but just as quickly as he had appeared, the man was gone. I stood there for a minute trying to let my eyes adjust some to the darkness. Hoping and praying that I could find some sort of a clue as to where I was or how to get out of there but all I found was more darkness.
"You can't forget," he said in a raspy voice, "The key, the key, you have to keep up with it, or all is lost." Though I couldn't see him through the darkness of the morning, I could feel a tiny brass key slip into my hand. With it, a pin prick. A shock just strong enough to make me shout. Where the key had once been, a tattoo now resided. It's intricate dark lines forming the shape of the key itself.
"If you lose this key the world will end. The amount of chemicals inside this will make the whole world explode. I know I lose stuff to easily in my hands, that is why I put it in yours. You will take care of it right?" I felt as if the weight of the world was in my hands, oh wait it pretty much was.
I knew exactly what it belonged to. "Are you sure?" I whispered. I tried to look into his deep blue eyes but they had fallen shut. His papery white skin lost all of its color. His pale lips had fallen slack. I turned the key over and stared at it.
THE NEXT DAY
I stepped on to the sidewalk and looks down the street, shutting my car door behind me. I sauntered up to the building suspiciously and entered the brass key into the old white door. I turned it. It clicked. The warm, sweet smell of Hadorn's hit me in the face and as I guided the door open just a pinch, 15 little donut holes rolled out onto the street. I slammed the door shut to keep the other 15 million inside. I screamed.
This key. The one I've only heard about. The one this entire quest was created for. It suddenly lay cold in my hand. I wrapped my fingers around it and allow myself to feel its vibrating power roll through my body and into the ground. No one is for sure exactly what door or compartment it opens. It is only known that within this locked region lies the greatest secrets to mankind and wealth beyond anyone's wildest dreams. My great grandfather claimed he knew where this place of great mystery and wealth was but was unable to tell anyone due to his death that lingered in the room. Since then it has been my family's quest to find the key and which it unlocks. Our only hint is "beneath the darkest heart lay with which you desire" which was left in the margin of my great grandfather's favorite book. The second and final piece of our quest begins now.
"You can't forget," he said in a raspy voice, "The key, the key, you have to keep up with it, or all is lost." Though I couldn't see him through the darkness of the morning, I could feel a tiny brass key slip into my hand. The smell of the musty room was making it hard to breathe. There was a warm breeze as the decrepit old man disappeared for the last time.
I clutched the key in my hand. It wasn't a normal key. Not one you find on the end of a lanyard. It was a book. Leather bound and containing brittle yellowed pages. I back slowly towards the door. Or, rather, where the door had been. I felt along the walls, searching for a seam. All my fingers touched was the crumbling wall paper. "It can't be," I whispered into the quiet room. I gripped the key tighter in my hand and thought of my room. My hair blew in a wind that I couldn't feel, colors spun before my eyes, and my feet were once again planted on firm ground. The blue walls of my room stood around me.
I didn't know exactly what it was for but I trusted that I would find out when I needed to use it. I could hear him turn and walk out and a thought came into my head. "When will you be back?" He stopped, sighing. "I don't know." Then he started walking again, until I couldn't hear his footsteps anymore. Everything suddenly got quiet and I didn't know whether he was still there or if he had snuck out without me knowing.
He looked up at me, with a worried face, and ran off. I put the key into my front pocket. I knew right then and there that this key leads to the time-traveling closet in my grandfather's bedroom. Him and I are the only ones that know about this closet, although, we plan to tell everyone about the invention sooner or later, just not right now.
It was all too much. My head hurt and I was expected to do so much without any indication as to where I was supposed to go. Why is it all happening? What does any of it mean? And most importantly, why me? What's so special about me that I was chosen to withhold something to significant?
I clenched it in my hand holding onto the one thing that could possibly save us all. A loud bang sounded and a gurgle from the old gate keeper emerged. With ringing ears i took off in a full out sprint across the rugged terrain ducking and dodging the tree branches. My mind was blank there was no time to mourn to think to wonder I was on autopilot allowing my unconscious mind to lead me through this forest of jagged rocks and trees twisted into ghastly demented shapes.
